This machinery at the bottom of drill

string is known as a drill bit

if any one of you doesn't know about

drill bits no issues

for now on you you can understand it as

a machinery that helps us drill holes

and in order to drill holes we need to

rotate our bits

oh so here our answer is right that in

order to

rotate the drill bit we are we are

requiring a rotary system

now how does this rotary motion reaches

the bits

and what are the key components involved

which transmits rotary motion

to the bits let's discuss about these

components

here you can see a few components

okay so our rotary table commences

of commences from rotary table also

known as

turntable this right here is rotary

table

our and this rotary table has a hollow

space

where master bushing can a master

bushing phase this is a master bushing

and in master bushing there is a hollow

space where calibration fits

okay now and again in Cali bushing there

is a hollow space

where Cali fits this one is 

Kelly

so if rotary motion is commencing from

the rotary table

it will transmit its rotary motion to

master bushing

master bushing will transmit it to the

Cali bushings and

Cali bushing will transmit it to the

Kelly and 

Kelly

again transmits it to the drill string

now we need to understand what actually

Cali is

the main purpose that Kelly serves is uh

the transmission of torque

from Kelly to from rotary table to

drill pipe but you can ask one question

that

why do we need Kelly why can't we

directly connect

a drill pipe to the Kelly bushing

so the answer to this question is that

our

tubular such as drill string drill pipes

are actually

a circular cross section they have

circular cross section

and it is almost provide a good amount

of torque to them

so if you need a cross section other

than circular

so that's where Cali comes into the

picture Cali's have

a square or a hexagonal cross section

and hence it is easier to transmit talk

to them

and hence and and it forwards

the talk uh

forward stock to the drill piper head

now uh cal and drill pipe

are connected with the help of 

Kali

saver sub

now what actually Cali saver sub is it

is a small piece of pipe

used between connecting uh Kelly and

drill pipe we use this Cali saver just

to prevent excessive wear of our drill

pipe

because we need to make connections we

need to break connections very

frequently

so in order to prevent that to prevent

our drill pipe from excessive wear

we use Cali survivor now one

one one important component is swivel

swivel actually permits the whole

drilling motion

the components above swivel are

stationary uh

the components above swivel uh are hook

traveling block

crown block etc and everything below

swivel can be rotated

so it it permits the efficient

rotational function of an 

vs

now this image you can see that these

are the all components involved and this

is how a typical rotary system looks on

rake

now this another system which can be

used for providing rotary motion

that's called top drive system top drive

system can be understood as a system

that is a combination of Cali and rotary

table

so either we can use a Cali and

rotatable combined or we can use a

single top drive system

but why do we need to use stock drive

system

because it has been proved

more efficient than the Kali plus rotary

table system

it has been proved more efficient in

horizontal drilling

it has been proved more efficient in

coring activities

one most important thing uh one most

important advantage of torture system is

that it also reduces the connection time

connection time how how does it reduce

connection time because

if we were using the Kali system there

we need to

connect the drill pipe with Kali so that

time is being reduced

so we are not wasting our time on

connections and breaking up the

connections right

now nothing comes free in this world

right it's cruel world

so top drive system has its own

disadvantages such as

these are very costly uh they are very

heavy so the total amount of

weight of the rate on the rake is

increased if we use top draft system

so basically uh these are these are all

the things you need to understand about

rotary system.
